閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中,選出最佳選項。
Turning on the TV, a wonderful scene comes to your eyes — a group of men, tall, strong and handsome, and women, young, beautiful and attractive, too. Together they eat in the finest restaurants, traveling everywhere around the world by luxurious planes and pleasure ships. They are models.
Do you envy them? What sort of life are models leading? Is it a wonderful life for a young lady or a young man?
A few models are well-known actors or actresses who can make a lot of money only by showing themselves off in commercials. But the majority of them are just curious to see what it is like. They’d like to be models just because they are attracted by what they imagine — models earn a lot of money and lead a glorious life. This is true for those who are very successful. However, most models find it difficult to get work. Very few can earn enough to live on, and for all models their expenses are high. Their agents claim about 20% of the earnings, and no model will get very far without a clever agent. Besides, they have to buy good clothing. They also have to pay to travel to interviews and reach the places where the work is to be done.
Interviews for a model job are known as cattle-markets in the modeling world, and not without a good reason. A top model can choose his or her work, demand and receive high fees and has his or her expenses paid. But for most models, the situation is quite different. And agent or employer inspects each model much as a farmer inspects cattle at a market. Intelligence, qualifications and personal characteristics count for little against good looks and tight figures. For all except the very few lucky ones, the life of a model is a continual search for work, trying to sell himself or herself in the face of fierce competition and, sometimes, not particularly moral standards on the part of some employers.
Immigration officials at airport look suspiciously at a girl whose passport shows her occupation as “Model”, and these are men and women of considerable experience of the world. It comes no surprise to find that some models prefer to put “Secretary” or “Businessman” as their jobs in their passports.
Modeling is a changeable world with great rewards for a tiny minority but not for the majority.
1. For models, their good looks and tight figures are _____________, compared with their intelligence and qualifications.
A. more important B. less needed
C. less essential D. more looked down upon
2. Which of the following can lead you to believe according to the passage?
A. A model’s traveling expenses are usually paid by his employer.
B. To be a model, good looks are the most important qualification.
C. Most models have a fairly easy way of life with high pay.
D. A model can hardly be successful without a good agent.
3. Models often put “Secretary” or “Businessman” instead of “Model” in their passports because ______________.
A. they want to avoid being stopped to sign their names by fans
B. a person with the occupation of a model is easily attacked by black societies
C. models are sometimes looked down upon
D. secretaries and businessmen are free of custom duty
4. The underlined word “suspiciously” can most probably be replaced by ___________.
A. doubtfully B. excitedly C. proudly D. sadly

【2013廣東省廣州市調研測試】
As thousands of communities in the USA — especially in the South — became booming gateways for immigrant families from Central and South America during the 1990s and the early years of the new century, public schools struggled with the unfamiliar task of serving the large numbers of English learners arriving in their classrooms.
Education programs needed to be built from scratch. “We had no teaching resources suitable for English learners here before. We had to develop them all ourselves,” a Texas principal said. Throughout the country, districts had to train their own teachers to teach English to non-native speakers or recruit teachers from elsewhere. School staff members had to figure out how to communicate with parents who spoke no English.
But even as immigration has slowed or stopped in many places, and instructional programs for English-learners have matured, serving immigrant families and their children remains a work in progress in many public schools, especially those in communities that are skeptical, or sometimes unwelcoming, to the newcomers. One of the biggest challenges educators face, is communicating effectively with parents who don’t speak English — an issue that, in part, has contributed to recent complaints of discrimination by Latino students in some cities.
“The parents’ role is very important for the success of these students, but it's also one of the most difficult things we’ve had to tackle,” said Jim D. Rollins, the president of the Springdale school district, where the 19,000-student school system has gone from having no English-learners 15 years ago to more than 7,500 now. “You have to make it a priority and work on it, work on it, and work on it.”
Aside from the practical challenges, such as finding bilingual (會說兩種語言的) staff members, guiding districts through such dramatic changes requires school leaders to bridge difficult political and cultural divides. For school leaders in the South, especially in the last few years, this difficult job has been made harder still by the negative attitudes of some locals towards immigrants.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中,選出最佳選項。
When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.
When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty five years ago. They were all tall and strong.
I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity(逆境) seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to meet with hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.
1. With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often __________.
A. kept watering them every morning B. paid little attention to them
C. talked to them to get their attention D. beat them to make them grow deep roots
2. What does the author think of the way Doctor Gibbs planted trees?
A. strange and harmful B. interesting and funny
C. original and reasonable D. cruel and unacceptable
3. Which prayer does the author wish for his sons?
A. Have an easy life, without too much to worry about.
B. Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future.
C. Have good luck, encountering less hardship in their life.
D. Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives.
4. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Prayers for my sons B. Doctor Gibbs and his trees
C. Growing roots D. Watering trees

Dr.Ferguson energetically pushed the preparations for his departure, and in person directed the construction of his balloon. For a long time past he had been applying himself to the study of the Arab language and the various Mandingoe idioms, and, thanks to his talents in language,he had made rapid progress.
In the meanwhile, his friend, the sportsman, never let him out of
his sight-afraid,no doubt, that the doctor might take his departure, without saying a word to anybody. On this subject,he tried to discourage him with the most persuasive arguments, which, however, did NOT persuade Samuel Ferguson, and wasted his breath,by which the latter seemed to be but slightly moved. In fine,Dick felt that the doctor was slipping through his fingers.
The poor Scot was really to be pitied. He could not look upon the
blue sky without a wild terror: when asleep,he felt dizziness(眩暈)that made his head turn around;and every night he had visions of crashing down from immeasurable heights.
We must add that, during these nightmares,he once or twice fell out of bed. His first care then was to show Ferguson a severe bump(腫塊)that he had received on the fall.“And yet,”he
would add, with warmth,“that was at the height of only three feet一not an inch more一and such a bump as this! Only think, then!”
This appeal, full of sad meaning as it was,did not seem to touch the doctor's heart. Not even the shadow of a doubt was ever suggested;and Samuel made an intolerable misuse of the first person plural:“‘Our’balloon,‘our’ car ;‘our’expedition.”
Dick trembled at them, although he was determined not to go ; he did not want to annoy his friend.Let us also disclose the fact that, without knowing exactly why himself,he had sent to Edinburgh for a certain selection of heavy clothing, and his best hunting-tools and fire-arms.

【2014高考英語福建省莆田市教學質量檢查試卷】
Recently we told you about a finding that more years of school could help students get higher
scores on intelligence tests. That was the finding of a study of teenage males in Norway. Now,other research shows that physical activity may help students do better in their classes .
The research comes as educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like physical education. They are using the time instead for academic subjects like maths and reading. The studies appeared between 2007 and 2013.They included more than 55,000 children, aged 6 to 18.
Amika Singh:“Based on the results of our study,we can conclude that being physically active is beneficial for academic performance. There are, first,Physiological explanations, like more blood flow, and so more oxygen to the brain.Being physically active means there are more hormones(荷爾蒙)produced like endorphins(內啡肽).And endorphins make your stress level lower and your mood improved, which means you also perform better.”
Also, students involved in organized sports learn rules and how to follow them. This could improve their classroom behavior and help them keep their mind on their work.
The study leaves some questions unanswered,however.Ms.Stash says it is not possible to say whether the amount or kind of activity affected the level of academic improvement. This is because of differences among the studies .
Also.they were mostly observational studies. An observational study is where researchers do not do controlled comparisons. They only describe what they observe. So they might observe a link that students who are more active often have better grades. But that does not necessarily mean being active was the cause of those higher grades.
The researchers said they found only two high - quality studies. They called for more high-
quality studies to confirm their findings. They also pointed out that “outcomes for other parts of the world may be quite different. ”
Still, the general finding was that physically active kids are more likely to do better in school.Ms.Singh says schools should consider that finding before they cut physical education programs. Her paper on “Physical Activity and Performance at School”is published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
72.The passage mainly tells us that ____
A.a research on physical education has been done by the researchers
B.there exists a possibility that physical activity leads to higher grades
C.the amount or kind of activity directly affects academic level
D.the research shows that the children aged 6 to 1 8 don't do sports
73.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Being mentally active is good for academic subjects.
B.The more hormones you have, the more stressed you will get.
C.They have found many high-quality studies to prove the research.
D.The educators in the research think studies, not exercise, mean much to students.
74.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 7 probably means ____.
A.good marks result from high-quality study
B.findings probably vary in different areas
C.physical activity will spread all over the world
D.academic performance depends on the surroundings
75.What's the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call our attention to the sports at school.
B.To introduce all types of physical activities.
C.To represent the academic performance.
D.To improve students' health .
