【2016高考訓(xùn)練】
A three-mile-long fishhook-shaped piece of land in the middle of Chesapeake Bay, Tangier Island has always been a community set apart from the mainland.
These days, the island's 500-plus residents, who mostly use golf cars as transportation on the village's narrow roads and who don't allow the public consumption of alcohol, have managed to preserve their traditional culture.
Probably the most striking example of their heritage is the islanders' unique way of speaking.
David L.Shores, a linguist (話言學(xué)家) who was born on Tangier Island, has found out the reason why the speech of Tangier Island strikes outsiders as strange.
According to Shores, the islanders pronounce their vowels louder and longer, which causes common words to sound different when spoken by Tangier natives.
Some, scholars have said the natives of Tangier speak an old form of English that goes back to the time of Queen F.Elizabeth I.Shores doesn't buy into that theory. "It's not Eliza- bethan English by any means," he says." I doubt if anyone could trace it to that, because the variety of English at that time were great."
Bruce Gordy, a Tangier native and a former teacher at the island's only school, has made a list of 350 strange expressions and words that he says are used and undertook only by the islanders. But Gordy clones’ think it's the strange vocabulary that puzzles outsiders most when hearing Tangier residents speak.
. "I think what confuses t.hem is the fact that we are ' talking backwards a lot.," he say's.
He offers an example."If somebody's stupid, you know what I say?" Gordy says." I'm saying he's smart, but the way I say it makes everyone know I’m emphasizing he's stupid
Both Gordy and Shores believe Tangier's isolation (孤立)has led to the islanders' unusual way of speaking.
. Now, the economy of Tangier Island is moving away from its tradition of crabbing and fishing as the number of crabs and oysters in the bay declines.More residents are finding work on tugboats(掩船)or looking for jobs on the mainland.
" Of course the sons and daughters went with their dad out crabbing. You don't go with your dad on the tugboat. That's not going to preserve Tangier culture, "Gordy says.
1.According to the text, Tangier Island
A.has been discovered recently
B.is a fast developing x-pillage
C.is a land of golf lovers
D.has a small population
2.In Shores' opinion, the language the islanders speak
A.can't be called English in fact
B.is unique in its pronunciation system
C.can never be understood by outsiders
D.shares some similarities with Elizabethan English
3.What's Gordy's attitude towards the preservation of Tangier culture'?
A.Confident. B.Satisfied C.Concerned. D.Angry.

A Book Review — The Snake-Stone
by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others ,being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James' swimming coach says to him: ‘You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.’
The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents(養(yǎng)父母).Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James' parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point:The turning point in the story comes while James' foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, ‘the snake stone’ which she left behind along with a note on which she had written,‘Take good care of Sammie.’ It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.
The journey:Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger's door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, ‘I was home.’

You've probably heard about sports coaches, fitness coaches, voice and music teachers, career counselors, psychiatrists(精神病醫(yī)師) and other specialists who teach skills and help us cope with daily life.
But there's a rapidly growing kind of professional who does a little bit of everything. She or he is called a “ life coach ”. People who are at crossroads in their lives, and corporations that want to give certain employees a career boost, are turning to them for help.
The idea that one person’s success story can change other people’s lives for the better goes back at least to the 1930s. Dale Carnegie’s famous self-improvement program “How to Win Friends and Influence People” came along soon thereafter.
But this new style of life coaches includes more than enthusiastic speakers or writers. They use their own experiences in business, sports, military service, or psychotherapy (心理療法)to help others make critical life decisions.
They often give their approach a slogan, such as “energy coaching” or “fearless living” or “working yourself happy”.
Dave Lakhani in Boise, Idaho, for instance, works with salespeople to develop what he calls a “road map”. He says an ongoing relationship with a coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for one’s career and life outside work.
Lakhani’s Bold Approach coaching firm also donates some of its time to help people who are anything but successful---including battered women and struggling single mothers.
But others in the so-called “helping professions” are not thrilled about the life-coaching movement. They say that anyone, trained or untrained, can call himself or herself a life coach, and that slick(華而不實(shí)的) promoters who mess with people’s lives can do more harm than good.
1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Working Yourself Happy.
B. Life Coaches Help with Tough Decisions.
C. How to Cope with Daily Life with Life Coaches.

A. The career counselor who teaches skills
B. The psychiatrist who helps us cope with daily life
C. The fitness coach who teaches us lessons
D. The specialist who helps us make important life decisions
3.The last paragraph is mainly about__________.
A. the introductions of life coach B. the disagreements of life coach
C. the effects of life coach D. the experiences of life coach
4.What is the author’s attitude towards life coaches?
A. Cautious. B. Approving. C. Casual. D. Disapproving.
