ASTACO, twin-armed support for lifesaving measures, is presented to the Tokyo Fire Department for trial use
A unique idea was born in the "self-motivated Research Project" competition held at the Technical Research Center in 2003. This was the twin-arm hydraulic excavator, which boasts two arms for greater efficiency. Research and development progressed swiftly, resulting in the creation of the twin-arm machine named ASTACO*1, which means "crawfish" in Spanish. ASTACO was presented to the Tokyo Fire Department for test use in 2008.
ASTACO provides support for humanitarian rescue efforts, using one arm to grasp rubble or other debris and the other to sever or break off the debris. ASTACO boasts a 3.5-ton class mini excavator as its right arm and a five-ton class mini excavator as its left. Results of a survey conducted at the Tokyo Fire Department gave ASTACO a grade of 80 percent for the effectiveness and operability of the two arms and for the stability of the unit overall.

With the interchangeability of attachments, the conventional hydraulic excavator has served a wide range of applications, including earth excavation and demolition. But the need for similar functions to perform increasingly complicated operations made the creation of an excavator that imitates two human arms inevitable.

Development of a new twin-arm demolition excavator for improving waste segregation operations
In 2006, under a consignment contract with NEDO*2, development began on new twin-arm machinery for operating a construction waste processing system. Based on technology used in ASTACO, this demolition machine boasts an 11-ton class hydraulic excavator as its right arm and a 3.5-ton class mini excavator as its left. Where as the ASTACO resembled a crawfish, the large right arm of this machine reminds one of a fiddler crab. The right arm is used to lift heavy loads of debris while the left arm is used to aid the process by grasping and severing debris. This new excavator supports complicated waste segregation operations, reducing the amount of labor and increasing efficiency for construction recycling. The ability to control the strength of the grip based on the targeted object-technology originally developed for ASTACO-enables the operator to perform highly delicate operations.
With ASTACO, both arms are used in the same manner to work on the same target object, where as with the NEDO twin-arm machinery, the heavy lifting is handled by the right arm, which boasts the capabilities of a base machine, and the left arm is used to support various tasks.
In both experimental machines, the design allows both arms to be controlled simultaneously with left and right joysticks, allowing operators to viscerally convey their own arm movements to the front. In addition, the arms move according to the operator's actions and objectives without the extra concern of controls.
Based on close communications with the customer, we are able to improve work efficiency by emphasizing the sensitivity and intuition of the operators at the worksite rather than technical standards. At Hitachi Construction Machinery, we believe this is the ideal situation for the development of construction machinery in the future.

Of course, other companies are capable of making similar twin-arm machinery. However, we make an extra effort to create equipment that integrates into the worksite smoothly and is highly instrumental for the operators, rather than concentrating on how we can further advance our technology. This, we feel, is Hitachi Construction Machinery's greatest strength.

Construction machinery will certainly become more and more intelligent, such as with the sharing of information between equipment. However, machinery will never replace humans in eery stage of the process. I think, at most, they should be regarded as peripheral support, implementing the movements and objectives of the human operator.
