Teaching Difficult Point: Improve the students’ integrating skills—reading skill and writing skill. Teaching Methods: 1. Fast reading to go through the reading material. 2. Discussion method to finish the writing task. 3. Individual, pair work or group work to make every student work in class. Teaching Aids: 1. a puter 2. a blackboard Teaching Procedures: FStep Ⅰ.Greetings Greet the whole class as usual. FStep Ⅱ.Revision T: In the last period we learnt the Present Continuous Passive Voice. Now I check your homework. Who can do Ex.1? S1 I’ll try… T: (After checking the students’ homework.) Please open your books and turn to Page63. Let’s do the exercise in Checkpoint 9. Change the sentences into the Passive Voice (After a while, teacher asks three students to give their answers. And show the suggested answers on the screen.) Suggested answers: A puter centre is being built for the students. The phones are also being used as cameras and radios. The phones are being used everywhere FStep Ⅲ.Reading Skill T: OK. English passages are very interesting. Do you often read any? S2: Sometimes I read some English stories. But while reading, I often e across some new words. In that case, I may give up reading it. T: You think reading is difficult. But in fact if you master some reading skills, you will find reading easier. Guessing the main words from the meaning of the context is a basic skill. Now look at the sentence on the blackboard: Since only one sixth of the land is arable, Japan relies on imported(進口) food. From the subject “one sixth of the land”,we know “arable” is a kind of land. From “imported food”,we can decide “arable” means “suitable for farming”.Do you know how to guess a word? Ss: Yes. T: OK. Please open your books on Page 63.Read the sentences in the box above to try to guess the meaning of the two new words. (One minute later, teacher checks the answers.) T: Who’d like to tell me what are the meanings of the two words? S3:I think “Andorra” and “Luxembury” are the names of the two European countries. T: Yes, you are quite right. FStep Ⅳ.Reading T: Nowadays puters are widely used in all kinds of fields. With them, many things bee easier and faster. Can you imagine what will happen to our world in the future? S4:… (Teacher collects the different answers from the students and says the following.) T: Today we’ll read a passage about a robot named AXL.I think you are interested in it. Please turn to Page 62.While you are reading, you may find some words and phrases difficult to understand. Read the passage and find them out. (Teacher gives the students a few minutes to read the passage and then asks them to say the difficult language points. At the same time, teacher writes them on the blackboard.) (Bb: survive, take over, human being, make electricity, planet, dream about, defeat, by force, e up with, wonder) T: For some words, we can guess their meanings from the context. Now read the passage again and try to guess the meanings of some words. (After a while, teacher checks the meanings of some words.) T: In order to understand some words and phrases better, I’ll explain some to you. Please look at the explanations and examples on the screen. According to the examples, you may understand them correctly. (Show the examples on the screen.) 1. You watch them until ten o’clock, and then I’ll take over. 2. The reporter interviewed those who survived in the earthquake. 3. On the island, they found the bones of human beings instead of the ones of animals. 4. The dam being built now will be used to make electricity. 5. The earth is a planet. 6. The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. 7. The boy dream of/about being a pilot. 8. The team was defeated in the match. 9. The man was taken away by force. 10. The worker came up with a suggestion at the meeting. 11.The experiment has succeeded. (Teacher asks some students to read the sentences and to translate them into Chinese.) T: Now you have known the exact meanings of some key words and phrases. Please read the passage agian for a few minutes, then answer my questions. (A few minutes later, teacher shows questions on the screen.) 1. What is the earth ruled by in the year 2374? 2. What happens to human beings by then? What about the world? 3. What does the leader of the human beings decide to do with AXL? 4. Can AXL be defeated by force? 5. What solution do the students e up with? (Teacher collects the students’ answers and then checks them.) Suggested answers: 1. The earth is ruled by a great puter named AXL that uses robots to make people work for it. 2. Human beings have to do everything AXL tells them to. The world is dark and dirty, and human beings have no room for happiness and fun. 3. The leader of the human beings has decided to do something to stop AXL and bring the machines and people back together. 4. It can’t be defeated by force. 5. The students e up with a peaceful solution. They will try to teach AXL about love and friendship in order that they can live together with the machines like friends in the future. FStep Ⅴ.Writing T: Now you have known only when AXL is taught about love and friendship, will AXL and human beings live together and will the world be beautiful again. Now you must write a letter to AXL to tell it about love and friendship. Three tips have been given. Please discuss them in groups to finish the task. (Teacher gives the students enough time to prepare it and then asks two students to read their letters. At last, teacher may give the suggested letter on the screen.) Sample writing: April 3,2374 Dear Q12: My name is Xiao Hong and I am a middle school student in Dalian. I would like to tell you about two things that I think are very important. Please read what I have to say, because I think it may be helpful to you. I want to tell you about love and friendship. Love is difficult to explain, but I will try. Love is a felling between two people, It is a very happy and warm feeling. When two people love each other, they almost bee one person. For example, if a father loves his child, he will feel sad when the child is sad and happy when the child is happy. There are many different kinds of love: you can love your parents or children, you can love your husband or your wife, or you can love someone outside your family. Friendship is also a kind of love, when two people are friends. They try to understand and help each other. A good friend will be there for you even when you are having a difficult time. Friends do things together and share thoughts, feelings and ideas. Love and friendship are necessary if we want a happy world. If there is love, people will not do bad things to each other; if we have friends, we don’t have to feel lonely or afraid, When people feel lonely and afraid, they often get angry with others and do mean things. If we learn to love and be friends, we can live happily together and solve the problems and difficulties we must face in life. FStep Ⅶ.Summary and Homework T: Today we’ve reviewed the useful expressions and the present continuous passive voice. We have also read a passage about the relation between human beings and robots in the future. At the same time, you have been trained to write a letter to robots and told is the importance of friendship between us. After class, do the exercises in Integrating skills on Page 136. Suggested answers: Ex. 1. 1. Teleportation is a bination of sending information through telephones or the Internet and transportation. 2. With normal transportation, a person or thing is moved from point A to point B. With teleportation, a person or thing is taken apart at point A and put together again at point B. 3. Teleporting a human being would be very difficult since there are so many parts in a human body. Ex.2 Word Strategy Teleportation Some words are made up of two parts. We can use the meaning of each part to guess the meaning of the word Photons Some words are explained in the sentence. The explanation is often between mas(,), dashes(…),or brackets(()). Apart We can use words we already know to guess the meaning of word that mean the same of words that mean the same or that have the opposite meaning. Sample writing The Thinkuter I think that the next big thing, the next important invention, will be a puter that can actually think. I don’t mean that this puter will be like a human being- it will not be able to e up with its own ideas-but it will be able to help us think. The puters we sue today can only do very simple things, like adding and subtracting, or storing and recalling information. The new machine will be able to do things that we do when we think. Since it is a puter that can think, I will call it a thinkuter. If we have thinkuters, we can do things that used to be impossible. For example, today, with normal puters, only a few very smart people can solve important problems. And even these experts can only solve the problems in the same way. With a thinkuter, we would be able to think in new ways and change the way we understand life,, science and nature. A thinkuter would give us more thinking power and we would be able to do more with our ideas. Everybody has lots of good ideas, even children do, but it is difficult to turn one’s idea into reality. If people had thinkuters, they could use their ideas better no ideas would be wasted. With thinkuters, we would also need to spend less time in school. We could learn more and faster. School is good for us and we need it, but if we could learn more and faster, we would have more time to do other things that are also important.
