He asked, “Where are you going to get off, John?” 4. He said to me, “You are wrong.” 5. “Are you a Party member?” he asked. 6. “A sport meet will be held in our school next week,” Li Mei said to her parents. T: There are some sentences on it. They are all direct speeches. Now Ill ask some students to turn them into indirect speech. (Six students are asked to write their answers on the blackboard. Then the teacher checks them and points out the mistakes. ) T: The first sentence is a request. So you should use the verb “asked” before the object “Li Ming”. The second one is an order, so you can use the verb “told”or “ordered” before the objects. That is, you should judge the mood of the direct speech and then decide whether it is a request or an order. Are you clear about that? Ss: Yes. T: OK. Look at the last four sentences. The direct speech includes two statements and two questions. We know, an object clause can be used here in changing the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech. But we must pay attention to the changes of the pronouns, the tenses and the adverbials when we change the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech. Answers: 1. The teacher asked Li Ming to open the window. 2. The monitor told us not to play games in the classroom 3. He asked John where he was going to get off. 4. He told me that I was wrong. 5. He asked me if/whether I was a Party member. 6. Li Mei told her parents that a sports meet would be held the next week.
