B The world is filled with smart, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days ago,my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic fixed it in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine sound. I was amazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough. I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.” There is an old saying that goes,“JOB means ‘Just Over Broke’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because schools do not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “l(fā)ive within their means”.They work and they pay the bills. Instead I remend that young people seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonalds?” almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how e McDonalds makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonalds is excellent at business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger. 25. The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that . A. he is just one of the talented people B. he is ready to help others C. he has a sharp sense of hearing D. he knows little about car repairing 26.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by“ ”. A. spend more than they can afford B. do in their own way C. live in their own circle D. live within what they earn 27. Why do talented people earn so little according to the author? A. They dont work hard enough. B. They lack financial intelligence. C. They dont make full use of their talents. D. They have no specialized skills. 28. The main purpose of the author is to tell us . A. how young people can find a satisfactory job B. what schools should teach about finance C. why so many talented people are poor D. how McDonalds makes much money C Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly. Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis (肺結(jié)核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on. At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might bee a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his pursuit of rhythm (韻律). John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overe the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to bine all that he learned. However, a bout (發(fā)作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821. 29.John Keats’ attitude towards life changed because of _________. A.They died of the same disease. B.They had a bad childhood C. They read many books. D.They showed strong interest in poetry 31.While pursuing his dream of being a poet first, John Keats was _________. A.determined B.experienced C.knowledgeable D.impatient 32.What do we know from the passage? A.Keats received little education at school. B.Keats once had a chance of being a doctor. C.In 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem. D.Endymion was about a real love story. D Everyone knows that death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases---clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(復(fù)活). Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues. Death is then unchangeable and final. Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, bined with narcotic sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism(新陳代謝), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death. To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自發(fā)的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal. 33. Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to _________ A. cool the organism. B. delay the ing of biological death. C.slow down the body’s metabolism. D.bring vital cells and tissues back to active life. 34.How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death? A. By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood. B. By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood. C. By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating. D. By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing. 35.All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that _________ A. her heart beat again. B. she rejected a penicillin injection. C.she regained her normal breath. D. she acted as lively as a healthy monkey. We eat to satisfy our hunger and to provide necessary nutrition for our body. 36____ Research shows that there are times when certain foods may provide possible solutions for various problems.
