2019-2020年高三英語(yǔ)二輪復(fù)習(xí) 課時(shí)訓(xùn)練16 2閱讀理解+閱讀填空+語(yǔ)法填空 Ⅰ.閱讀理解 Which es first, happiness or money? Are richer people happier? And if so,how do people get much richer? A recent study could tell you the answer. The study looked into thousands of teenagers and found that those who felt better about life as young adults tended to have higher ines by the time they turned 29.Those who were happiest earned an average of $8,000 more than those who were the most depressed. The researchers, from University College London and the University of Warwick, say that very gloomy teens,no matter how tall or smart they were, earned 10% less than their peers, while the happier ones earned up to 30% more. Happier teenagers have an easier time getting through school, college and the job interview, chiefly because they always feel better about life.It may also be true that happier people find it easier to make friends, who are often the key to homework help or networking. A report in June suggested that professional respect was more important than dollars in terms of workplace happiness. In August scientists announced that they had found the gene for happiness in women,Alas (the same gene doesn’t appear to have the same effect on men). And in October researchers in the UK and in the US announced that people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day report being the happiest. The big question is: if it is really true that happier kids end up being wealthier kids,is it necessary for parents to get their kids to do the homework? The fact is that no homework will make kids happy but surely hurt their grades.Studies do show, after all, that more education leads to betterpaid jobs, which may give us a deep thought. “These findings show that the teenagers’happiness is important to their future success,” one of the report’s authors writes.“But what is the most important is that we should find a way to help children gain more satisfaction from doing schoolwork.” 1.What conclusion can the researchers draw from the recent study? Currently there are numbers of university rankings, and each has its own list of criteria. But the main categories are the same: academic reputations, graduates’performance and faculty resources. However, experts point out the ranking process isn’t entirely reliable.Mark Kantrowitz,a US financial aid researcher, said university rankings were mostly just for show.He wrote in The New York Times,“ It may give your parents better bragging rights, but that’s about it.” Moreover,it’s not difficult to see the limitations of university rankings. Many rankings focus on the number of times research work is cited (引用) by other researchers. It helps British and US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favored language of academia,John O’Leary,a member of the QS Global Academic Advisory Board, told The Guardian. Also, rankings such as QS mainly focus on the qualities of the university rather than its students.“Any university ranking is likely to help students make better decisions about where to study, but the need to balance them with other more human factors is also important,” said Phil Moss,an education and admissions consultant.“Advice from graduates or current students can be valuable in providing a genuine insight into the experience or quality of a particular degree program. It can also add an element that rankings can never convey—the actual emotion of a university experience.” 5.Why do universities consider rankings important? A.Rankings make them more appealing. B.Rankings are students’only reference. C.Rankings can increase their academic level. D.Rankings help them plete their websites. 6.What does the underlined “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.Academic research work. B.The number of researches. C.The way of ranking universities. D.The limitations of university rankings. 7.According to John O’Leary, what helps British and US universities rank well? A.The wide use of English in academia. B.Their outstanding qualities. C.Their graduates’excellent performance. D.The academia’s favor to them. 8.Besides rankings, what does Phil Moss suggest you should refer to if you’re picking a university? A.Investment in education. B.Guidance from professors. C.Information on websites. D.Suggestions from students. 【語(yǔ)篇解讀】 在選擇大學(xué)時(shí)除了要考慮排名外,還要考慮畢業(yè)生或在校生的建議。 5.解析:選A。根據(jù)第一段的最后一句“The reason is simple:rankings help them to attract students, staff and research investment”可知,因?yàn)榕琶軌蜃尨髮W(xué)更有吸引力,因此應(yīng)選擇A。 6.解析:選C。根據(jù)第四段的第二句“Many rankings focus on the number of times research work is cited(引用)by other researchers”可知,許多大學(xué)的排名關(guān)注于科研成果被其他研究人員引用的次數(shù),所以It指的是“大學(xué)排名的方式”,因此應(yīng)選擇C。 7.解析:選A。根據(jù)第四段第三句中的“It helps British and US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favored language of academia”可知,應(yīng)選擇A。 8.解析:選D。根據(jù)最后一段的“Advice from graduates or current students can be valuable in providing a genuine insight”可知,可以征詢學(xué)生的建議,因此應(yīng)選擇D。 Ⅱ.閱讀填空 A great number of people can get injured or even killed resulting from a human stampede (蜂擁).The bad thing is that a peaceful group of people can quickly turn into a crazy panicked crowd.1.____________ If you are in a crowd, the most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice the exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out.2.____________ If you are in a crowd of moving people, wet or uneven ground can be slippery or dangerous, causing you to fall.
