But now I can understand.Im a weekend mom.My child, Henry, is a dog. Henry just returned to his father, Jack, after a happy stay with me.For ten days, I fed him the best food, canceled plans to stay home with him and let him sleep on the bed every night. Jack and I broke up a year ago.But neither of us wanted to part with Henry, so we share him.Not surprisingly, Henry is a willing participant in our contest for his love. Jack doesnt let Henry sleep on his bed, so thats where I can always gain big points.I feed Henry higher quality food.I am always replacing his expensive “thingy" ,a cotton knot he likes chewing on.It s his favorite toy, and the only one he has is at my house.Score another one for me. Jack now has a girlfriend, Lucy.At first she was afraid of dogs, which secretly delighted me.But that Henry, just trying to be polite(the way I taught him to be),won her over. If truth be told, as time passes, there has been a slight change in Henry s behavior toward me.The worst was one day when Jack dropped him off for a two week stay.Henry and I were in the backyard playing as Jack was driving off. When he heard Jacks truck, he ran after it for two blocks until Jack had to stop and bring him back. That hurt, especially since I had friends over at the time.In a rare conciliatory (安撫的) mood, Jack said to me, "You know, I m his best friend, but youll always be his mom." Whatever it takes, I plan to make sure it stays that way. 【小題1】At the writers home, Henry________. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit. “Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?” “No, I’m not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet. “So what brings you here?” He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.” “So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.” He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest. “Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(腫瘤)are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars. He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.” The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金發(fā)美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen. 【小題1】The author was stopped by the police officer because ______. A student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path . Thats when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio parked across a railway line. Second later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. Ceelys near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device(導(dǎo)航儀).She had never driven the route before .It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS. But it made no mention of the crossing. "I put my plete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train," she told the BBC. W ho is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceelys story in his book When Machines Fail US, finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, But our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless key boards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focuses digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the CPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say. It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat puter-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some bination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is plex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be way a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long. ( )1.WhatdidPaulaCeelythinkwasthecauseofheraccident? A.Shewasnotfamiliarwiththeroad. I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I face my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. It’s not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say to ice cream? mitment. A mitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improve my body shape.
