They were the “in” thing and it seemed every girl except me had one. On my 13th birthday, my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials (姓名首字母) carved into it. I was in heaven. What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasnt being “replaced”. Wed been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything — so most of the “new” stuff (東西) we got was really just to replace what wed lost. But not my ring. My ring was new. Then, only one month later, I lost it. I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning. I was sad and searched everywhere for it. But it seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, I gave up and stopped looking for it. And two years later, we sold the house and moved away. Years passed, and a couple of moves later, I was visiting my parents when Mum told me that she had something for me. It wasnt my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other giftgiving occasion. Mum noticed my questioning look. “Youll recognize this one,” she said, smiling. Then she handed me a small ring box. I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside. The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring. As it had my initials carved into it, they realized who owned the ring. Theyd had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother. And it still fits me. 21.The underlined word “in” in the first paragraph probably means “________”. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding. Take Fuller Notes Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words. Study the Middle The best time to review is soon after youve learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review. Sleep on It Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. Its easier to remember material youve just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after youve fallen asleep. bine Memory and Understanding There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding. The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a pletely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again. 25.You can notice your mistakes by ________. A. saying things out aloud B. taking notes C. studying the middle D. sleeping on it 答案與解析 A 從Recite As You Study一欄最后一句中的“help you to notice your mistakes”可知,A項正確。 26.When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading. A. study after a period of activity B. do some exercise after studying C. study as soon as you get up D. study before going to sleep 答案與解析 D 從Sleep on It一欄,可知,D項正確。 28.Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding? A. Thinking about an idea in different ways. B. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know. C. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop. D. Going back to what first made you confused and start again. 答案與解析 C 從最后一段第一句可知,A項有幫助;從本段第二句可知,B項有幫助;從文章最后一句可知,D項有幫助。C項為正確選項。 C It does not have to be January 1st to give yourself a chance to make the most out of your day. Every day is a new day and a fresh start to learn, grow, develop your strengths, free yourself from past regrets or hurts, and move forward older and wiser. Every day gives you a chance to reinvent (重新審視) yourself. It is never too late to change things that are not working in your life. Each day is a new beginning and a piece of blank paper. How would you like to create your day? What would you like to paint on it? If you wake up in a negative mind, you are more likely to paint a dark picture throughout the day, and your picture will not show hope, happiness and joy. If you take each day to think actively, and have a positive intention for how you would like to create your day, how would your life be different? What can daily positive intentions do for you? Every day you will give yourself the gift of an “attitude of gratitude (感恩)”. Each day is a chance to look at things in a different way. You can experience each day in the beauty of the world — and the beauty of you who are in it! You find yourself changing from “I cant” to “I can”. With a focus on positive intentions, you feel you are full of power and more like a “winner” than a “l(fā)oser”. You pay more attention to the present, and will be more likely to live fully in the present each moment of each day. After all, the past is a great place to visit, but you dont want to live there! So how about starting each day taking a moment to think of a positive intention for the day? 29.The first paragraph mainly tells us ________. A. we should make every day a new start B. January 1st is the most important day C. learning is helpful in reinventing ourselves D. we neednt change ourselves at all 答案與解析 A 每一天都是一個新的開始,每一天都給自己一個重新審視自己的機會。A項正確。 30.If you have daily positive intentions, you will ________. A. get a positive result B. have a busy life C. get gifts from others D. be a plete loser 答案與解析 A 早上起來有消極的態(tài)度,一天都不會有希望、幸福、快樂;而有積極態(tài)度則會“full of power and more like a winner”。A項正確。 31.From the passage we can learn that ________. A. past regrets or hurts can make you older and wiser B. think actively and you will be a winner, not a loser C. the present is not where you should live for ever D. positive intentions for each day are of great help 答案與解析 D A項錯在past regrets or hurts,原句為“free yourself from past regrets or hurts”;B項錯在will be,原句為“more like a winner”;C項錯在not,原文中說“過去”是a great place to visit,而“現(xiàn)在”應(yīng)該“l(fā)ive fully”。D項正確。 D Register (注冊) in person Register by phone Register by mail 1781 N.
