At the same time my 44-year-old husband, Ed, was losing his life, my mother was losing her ability to remember. She forgot how to start the car, whether or not she had eaten and which family members had died — including my father. I became afraid that one day I, too, would be unable to recall my husband, not because of Alzheimer, but simply because my memory of him might disappear. So from the day of Ed’s diagnosis until his death a year later, I set out to memorize him. I’d always be able to recite his qualities — kind, gentle, smart, funny — but I wanted to be able to think about the physical man in my mind as fully as possible when he was gone. Later I learnt that memory has a will of its own. You can’t control it any more than you can influence the weather. When it springs up, a person loved and lost is found, even just for a few seconds. Recently, when I was driving, I had a deep and sudden sense of Ed, and the way it felt to have him next to me in the car. My body softened as it used to when we were together seven years ago, living a shared life. I wasn’t remembering his face or the way he walked; the careful details I had stored had nothing to do with this moment in the car. And my mom’s brain couldn’t label my father correctly, but that was not important. It was clear to me that her husband was vivid in her heart, a memory even Alzheimer’s could not destroy. I believe there is a difference between memory and remembering. Remembering has something to do with turning the oven off before leaving the house, but memory is nurtured by emotion. It springs from a deeper well, safe from the passage of time. 56. The writer felt afraid because ______. A. her mother was losing her life B. her memory of Ed might disappear C. no doctor diagnosed Ed’s problem D. she would develop Alzheimer in time 57. In the writer’s opinion, memory has its own will so ______. A. the missing family members will return home B. the weather can’t control our memory C. it can spring up for a few seconds D. it is safe from a passage of time 58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Alzheimer is not very harmful to human beings. B. A physical man must be kind, gentle, smart, funny. C. Good memory begins with turning the oven off before leaving. D. Memory has much to do with the deep emotion in one’s heart. 59. What is the best title of the passage? A. Memory — the Deeper Well from Our Heart B. Remembering — the Passage of Time C. Alzheimer Can Never Destroy Our Memory D. D Most Americans get the money they have from their work; that is, they earn an ine from wages or salaries. The richest Americans, however, get most of their money from what they own — their stocks, bonds, real estate, and other forms of property, or wealth. Although there are few accurate statistics to go by, wealth in American society appears to be concentrated in very few hands. More than 20 percent of everything that can be privately owned is held by less than one percent of the adult population and more than 75 percent of all wealth is owned by 20 percent of American adults. The plain fact is that most Americans have no wealth at all aside from their homes, automobiles, and a small amount of savings. Ine in the United States is not as highly concentrated as wealth. In 1917 the richest 10 percent of American families received 26.1 percent of all ine, while the poorest 10 percent received 17 percent, mainly from Social Security and other government payments. The most striking aspect of ine distribution is that it has not changed significantly since the end of World War II. Although economic growth has roughly doubled real disposable family ine (the money left after taxes and adjusted for inflation) over the last generation, the size of the shares given to the rich and the poor is about the same. By any measure economic inequality is great in the United States. The reality behind these statistics is that a large number of Americans are poor. In 1918, 14 percent of the population was living below the federal government’s poverty line, which at that time was an annual ine of $ 9,287 for a non-farm family of two adults and two children. In other words, about one out of seven Americans over 31 million people were officially considered unable to buy the basic necessities of food, clothes, and shelter. The suggested poverty line in 1981 was an ine of about $11,200 for a family of four. By this relative definition, about 20 percent of the population or more than 45 million Americans were poor. 68. What do the majority of the Americans have in terms of wealth? A. Their ine and savings. B. Everything they own in their homes. C. Actually, they have no wealth at all. D. Their house, cars and small amounts of savings. 69. Why is economic inequality still great in the US in spite of the economic growth? A. Because the proportion of ine received by the rich and the poor remains almost the same as in 1917. B. Because the economic growth has widened the gap of the family ine between the rich and the poor. C. Because ine in the US is still concentrated- 1.請仔細閱讀文檔,確保文檔完整性,對于不預(yù)覽、不比對內(nèi)容而直接下載帶來的問題本站不予受理。
