The story in the song takes place not too far from where I live in Los Angeles. Its a good “driving” song, nothing plicated or “deep”. Say Something by A Great Big World — A more recent song about a couple losing contact with each other. The piano part is of very little playing but beautiful. American Pie by Don McLean — Another song from my youth in the 1980s, very popular with almost every American of my generation. It retells some of the key events of the middle 20th century, a song of happy memories of the past and wanting to return to those better times. The Weight by The Band — Another old song, originally made public in 1968, but one I didnt hear until I was in high school more than 10 years later. I dont understand the words to the song pletely, but the feeling of the song is very forting to me. Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers — This Los Angeles group wrote a song that I used to listen to when I first moved to LA more than 25 years ago. I didnt know anyone here when I first arrived. When I got bored, I used to drive up and down the major streets that cross the city from east to west, listening to this song about “the city of angels” being as “l(fā)onely as I am”. (Dont worry! I have plenty of friends now.) 1.What does the underlined word “deep” probably mean? A.With skill. B.With fort. C.With a normal meaning. D.With a significant meaning. D。 2.When did the author probably hear The Weight by The Band? A.In 1968. B.In 1970. C.In the 1980s. D.In the 1990s. 根據(jù)第五段第一句“The Weight by The Band ... more than 10 years later”可知,這首歌于1968年發(fā)行,但是作者在十多年后才聽到,所以作者有可能是在20世紀(jì)80年代聽到這首歌的。 3.When the author first moved to LA, the song he used to listen to was ________. A.Say Something B.American Pie C.The Weight D.Under the Bridge 解析:選D 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段第一句“Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers — This Los Angeles group wrote a song that I used to listen to when I first moved to LA more than 25 years ago”可知,作者最開始到洛杉磯時(shí)經(jīng)常聽的一首歌是Under the Bridge。 Back in January, I was watching a college football game and came to a realization: As a high school senior, pretty soon, Ill be the same age as some of the top athletes in the world. This realization was both confusing and forting. Until this point, Id always thought of top athletes in another generation. I had no real connection to people in the news or playing sports on TV because they were so much older. But pretty soon, people of my age will be the ones dominating (支配) the news. The fort came in understanding that as I prepare to graduate from Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick, Im not that far off from entering the real world, and I will have a chance to make a name for myself. Right now, Im at the end of one of life stages, with many more to e. As seniors, many in my class developed superiority_plexes. Wed see babyfaced ninthgraders and think, “Ugh, those annoying freshmen.” Or wed hear juniors plain about starting the college application process and say to each other, “Those juniors have no idea what theyre talking about.” Of course, last years seniors said the same thing about last years juniors, repeating a timeless cycle. Psychologist and author Thomas Armstrong writes that life is made up of 12 stages. He stresses that no stage is more important than another, and each has its own unique gifts. There is no highest point in life, no impressive ending when you are above everybody else. At the same time, there is no lowest point in life; at no point is a human worthless and below others. Just as an infant isnt below everyone else, our elders arent above everyone else. 4.What can we know about the author? A.Hell finish his high school studies about one year later. B.Reflecting on the past is a part of his daily routine. C.Football is a particular favorite with him. A.The top athletes are the same age as him. B.There is a possibility that he can be famous. C.He will be admitted to his dream university. D.Hes made full preparations for entering society. 根據(jù)第三段的內(nèi)容,尤其是“I will have a chance to make a name for myself”可知,作者覺得自己的感悟中令人欣慰的部分是他很快就會步入真正的世界,也將有機(jī)會讓自己出名。make a name“出名,成名”。故選B。 6.What does the underlined phrase “superiority plexes” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.A habit of making plaints. B.A habit of following in others footsteps. C.A feeling that you are better than others. D.A feeling that others are unapproachable. 根據(jù)第四段中的“Wed see babyfaced ninthgraders and think ... repeating a timeless cycle”可知,該段主要講的是作為畢業(yè)班學(xué)生,作者的很多同學(xué)會在新生面前自以為是,或者嘲笑那些抱怨大學(xué)申請過程(復(fù)雜)的低年級學(xué)生,即高年級學(xué)生會在低年級學(xué)生面前產(chǎn)生一種優(yōu)越感,故畫線詞的意思應(yīng)為“優(yōu)越感”。故選C。 7.What message is conveyed in the last paragraph? A.Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed. B.Life is never smooth, full of ups and downs. C.One should try to reach his greatest potential. D.Everyone has their own value and position in life. For many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare, exotic species. That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality. In December 2015, he and a team of Australian and American scientists ventured into an isolated tropical rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the mistcovered region. “As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around,” Bexler says. Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chickenlike bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeaters — the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years. The honeyeater wasnt the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species — 13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, four butterflies, and five palms. “We_were_like_kids_in_a_candy_store,” Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before.” The newfound species didnt shy away from the scientists. Two longnosed echidnas — primitive egglaying mammals — let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. An echidna looks like a hedgehog and is also called a spiny anteater. Bexler thinks the animals werent scared because they had never seen humans before. “In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people,” he explains. “This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people.” Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia. Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from the outeredges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods. The wooded area is approximately a 10day walk from the nearest village. Bexler and his team did not have enough time during the expedition to study the area pletely. They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species. “We just scratched the surface,” Bexler says. “Anyone who goes there will e back with a mystery.” 8.Which word best describes Bruce Bexler? A.The best way to explore the area is by helicopter. B.The area has not been visited by scientists for many years. C.The area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science. Mr Ma, aged 52 this year, is now the richest person in Asia and the 14th wealthiest in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His net worth has climbed $8.5bn this year to $41.8bn. Mr Ma, who said Alibaba revised 10year plans annually, foresaw the pany being the fifthlargest eventually by 2036 by serving burgeoning (迅速發(fā)展) Chinese middle classes, taking advantage of global trade and making use of its valuable data. Mas ments about the evolution of datadriven technology echoed those of Masayoshi Son, chairman of Japans SoftBank. SoftBank — Alibabas largest shareholder — has invested billions in panies such as ARM with the intention of staking out a leading position in the future Internet of Things. “The Internet of Things is going to be big because in the past, machines ‘drank’ electricity,” Mr Ma told investors. “In the next 20 years, machines will ‘drink’ data. In the future, no pany, no country, no business can survive without data.” 12.The text is intended to tell us that ________.
