It's 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (鬧鐘) rings in my ears. I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. It's not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.
Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother's chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it's okay to just say “no”. I shouldn't feel sorry for refusing food that I don't want to eat.
So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.?What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self-confidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It's through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.
1.Why is there a smile on the author's face in the morning?
A.Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully.
B.Because she finishes her favorite exercise.
C.Because she enjoys the interesting DVD.
D.Because she feels a sense of achievement.
根據(jù)第一個段落的最后一句話, 先排除C的說法;在本句中“a smile of success of pushing…”
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?
A.She doesn't treat others politely.
B.She likes to make others surprised.
C.Others don't understand what she dose.
D.Others try to help her by offering her food.
從本段的情節(jié)來看,選項A,D都相差甚遠;而“I need exercise to get through each day”正是表明了作者的喜好,而不是像選項B說的喜歡出奇,故排除B。從“raised their eyebrows, surprised by...”
3.What does the underlined word “commitment” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Good health. B.Firm belief.
C.A strong power. D.A regular habit.
4.What can we learn about the author from the text?
A.She acts in a strange way.
B.She wants to look different from others.
C.She aims to develop a good body shape.
D.She has difficulty getting along with others.
Improving your vocabulary can be done at any age and any level of education. Even college students can benefit from an enlarged vocabulary, which will enhance spoken and written communication as well as providing a deeper grasp of any language. Often people are encouraged to improve their vocabulary by a major test, but improving your vocabulary can be done for fun as well. Most word games are interactive, so you enjoy company while you expand your vocabulary.
Another way of improving your vocabulary is to do word puzzles. Most newspapers include crosswords, simple cryptology puzzles, and jumbles that get progressively harder throughout the week.Try to commit to completing all of the word puzzles every day, or at least attempt to finish them. Word puzzles can also be done in groups, especially if you enjoy competition. You can purchase books of word puzzles of varying difficulty for a different challenge.
A simple way to improve your vocabulary is to use the dictionary.Create flashcards of unfamiliar words and practice them in the train, on the bus, or when you wake up in the morning. Try to practice words in a variety of environments so that you really learn them, and make sure to use the words in daily sentences as well so that you can grow accustomed to using them correctly. If you hear someone using a word you don't recognize, ask him or her about it or look it up.
1.What does the underlined word “enhance” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Improve. B.Decrease.
C.Practice. D.Purchase.

What is the most popular food in western countries? If you are not sure, statistics might give you the answer.
Every year, some 20 million people walk into restaurants and buy 2 billion sandwiches. Americans alone eat more than 1 billion sandwiches annually. If you lined up all the sandwiches Westerners eat in a year, they would go around the world 13 times!
When John Montagu made the very first sandwich in England in 1762, he couldn't have imagined that it would still be very popular almost 250 years later. There is a campaign starting this month in the US to find the healthiest and best tasting sandwich in the country.
Sandwiches are commonly carried to school or work in lunch boxes or brown paper bags to be eaten for lunch. They are also taken on picnics and hiking trips. Their long-lasting popularity lies in their convenience and fast preparation time.
You can put everything you want inside a sandwich. They are easy to clean up after, nutritious and come in hundreds of different kinds.
Well-known American chef Dave Lieberman adds another reason.“I think people like to touch their food, kids especially. It's just a natural instinct. You don't have to use a knife and fork to eat a sandwich,” he said.
Sandwiches can be hot or cold with almost any kind of filling. One of the most popular kinds is the BLT—bacon, lettuce and tomato. Although it is a simple food, it can still be creative. Sandwiches can be served open-faced, with sushi inside or grilled with delicious fillings.

The hottest“green”toy in Germany isn't made of organic or recycled materials. This one has a solar panel and only runs if kids remember to insert bright red “energy stones”that power the space station.Germany,a pioneer in many renewable energy initiatives,is also at the forefront of creating environment-friendly toys aimed at making kids think about where energy comes from and how much of it they can use, raising awareness through play.A number of high-tech green toys are on display at this year's Nuremberg toy fair, which runs through Sunday.
Among them, there are hydroelectric-powered(水電動力的)toy cars, and doll houses with wind turbines and rainwater catchers. The bright green “Future Planet”space station features an inner atrium(中庭)with a fan that is powered by a functioning solar cell. Its aim is to get kids to use their imagination about how energy will be created in the future.
Makers and retailers believe such toys will play an increasingly important role in their future—and that of our kids.“Energy is the question of the future and we are definitely thinking about this as we move ahead,”said Judith Schweinitz,a spokeswoman for Playmobil, maker of the solar panel-fitted space station.“It is increasingly being brought into our play concept.”Green toys—which range from those made of sustainable materials to ones like the space station that just raise environmental awareness—make up only a sliver of the $ 84 billion international toy market, but their share is growing, studies indicate.Environmental research firm Earthsense, based in Syracuse,New York, predicts that green toys will account for about $ 1 billion,or 5 percent of U.S.toy sales in the next five years.Parents are smart and they want information about what's in the product. That's what's really driving the market.

Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲勞). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情感的) attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists, J. A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated-those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
1.What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer's blood.
B. Albert Einstein didn't feel worn out after a day's work.
C. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
D. A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
2.According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A. Challenging mental work. B. Unpleasant emotions.
C. Endless tasks. D. Physical labor.
3.What's the author's attitude towards the scientists' ideas?
A. He agrees with them. B. He doubts them.
C. He argues against them. D. He hesitates to accept them.
4.We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ________.
A. have some good food B. enjoy their work
C. exercise regularly D. discover fatigue toxins
根據(jù)第一段中的“But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long...”和后面的“To the amazement of these scientists...no fatigue at all”可知,許多年前,科學(xué)家們驚訝地發(fā)現(xiàn)人的大腦是不知疲倦的。
2.B。 根據(jù)文章倒數(shù)第二段第一句中的“...comes from our mental and emotional(情感的)attitudes”和該段最后的“due to emotional problems”可知,導(dǎo)致sitting workers疲勞的是情感問題。
3.A??疾樽髡邞B(tài)度。
