【2016模擬題】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
NASA has recently found a twin Earth in the Milky Way. Scientists said the planet was the closest to Earth that has been seen.
Kepler 452b, which has been named Earth 2, is six billion years old. It has a 385-day year and orbits its star at the same distance as us. It is so like Earth that NASA believes it is possible that life once inhabited the planet. Kepler 452b is 60 percent larger in diameter (直徑) than Earth. Scientists say that the planet received the same kind of sunshine as we do on Earth. Thus, plants could survive if taken to the planet.
Since the planet is 1.5 billion years older than Earth, scientists say it can show a possible future for earth. “If Kepler 452b is indeed a rocky planets, its location could mean that it is just entering an uncontrollable greenhouse period of its climate history.” Said Doug Caldwell, a scientist working on the Kepler Mission.
According to Caldwell, the increasing energy from its aging sun might be heating the surface and evaporating any oceans. Kepler 452b could be experiencing now what Earth will undergo more than a billion years from now, as the Sun ages and grows brighter.
The discovery also gives new hope that alien(外星人) civilizations may exist beyond the Solar System. “We won’t be going to this planet but our children’s children’s children might be.” said Jeff Coughlin, another research scientist on the Kepler Mission.
The Kepler space telescope (太空望遠(yuǎn)鏡) has been looking for signs of new worlds outside the Solar System since May 2009, and has so far found more than 4,000 planets. But those planets are either too hot or too cold to sustain life.
(注:Kepler Mission NASA 設(shè)計的發(fā)現(xiàn)類地行星的太空探索任務(wù))
1. The following statements about Kepler 452b (Earth 2) are all correct except ________.
A. It has existed for six billion years.
B. It is 60% larger in diameter than the earth.
C. It has already entered an uncontrollable greenhouse period of its climate history
D. It is the closest planet to the earth.
2. The importance of the discovery of Earth2 lies in the fact that Earth2 ________.
① can show a likely future for the earth
② gives new hope that alien civilizations may exist beyond the Solar System
③ proves that life once inhabited the planet
④ proves that plants can survive on other planets apart from the eartth.
⑤ is going through now what the earth will undergo more than a billion years from now
A. ④⑤ B. ①③ C. ②④ D. ①②
3. What can we infer from the text?
A. The earth has existed for about 4.5 billion years.
B. Kepler 452b is one of the planets in the Milky Way.
C. Doug Caldwel and Jeff Coughlin are both research scientists on the Kepler Mission.
D. More than 4,000 planets outside the Solar System still cannot sustain life now.
1. C. 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中的“…its location could mean that it is just entering an uncontrollable greenhouse period of its climate history.”
根據(jù)第二段第一句話“Kepler 452b, which has been named Earth 2, is six billion years old.”和第三段第一句話中的“Since the planet is 1.5 billion years older than Earth,…”
It is over 40 years since first atomic bomb was dropped on a major city in Japan. Yet even now its effects are showing themselves and may continue to do so for years to come. Much effort and human energy have been used to try to prevent such a terrifying thing from happening again. So far there is no guarantee that it will not. Countries which already possess nuclear knowledge and resources have bombs stored away which are powerful enough to wipe out all life on earth. But this is not all. Other countries, which previously were not so advanced in technology, are gradually buying materials that can be used for making atomic devices. This nuclear energy will naturally be of great value in helping the economy of poorer nations.
The generation of electricity through nuclear power came directly from the original work on the atom bomb. Because of the increase in demand for energy and the possibility of decreasing supplies of oil and natural gas, the interest in electricity has increased. One of the by-products of nuclear power stations is plutonium (鈽) produced from unclear fuel: plutonium is ingredient (成分) in bomb-making. It means that there are far more opportunities for the manufacture of bombs.
This brings the problem to a full circle again. How can something so valuable and useful be controlled so that it works for the benefit and not the destruction of man? (from www.nmet168.com)
1. The effects of dropping the first atomic bomb ________.
A. are not over B. may go on forever
C. could last much longer D. will not be over in the near future
2. The writer says that enough atomic bombs have already been manufactured to ________.
A. wipe out Japan B. last forever
C. act as a peace-keeping device D. destroy all living things
3. The advantage of less developed countries being able to make atomic devices is that it ______.
A. gives them more opportunities for work B. will help poor countries to become richer
C. will enable them to make better explosives D. will be of great value to them
4. The second paragraph tells us that the increased demand for electricity today ________.
A. has led to the decrease in supplies of oil
B. means that more countries are interested in nuclear power
C. has increased the risk of accidental explosions
D. has increased the very means of producing more atomic bombs

The British aren't having as many children as they used to.One reason is that people are having children much older than before, meaning they have fewer years in which they can have them. After years at university, they need a few years of work experience before they can get the job they want. They might then get married, but it's incredibly expensive to buy a house in the UK.
The above explains why young British people now don't move out of their parents' home until they are around 30 years old on average. It is not until they are 30 that they can afford their own home.Increasingly,it is not until that age that they can afford to get married and start a new life in a new home. It's only after this age that many young people start thinking about having a child.
So a British person manages to get a job,get a home and get married. Why isn't he or she then having at least two children on average? The main reason is that it is quite expensive to bring up a child in the UK.Why is it expensive?Well, these days, both parents need to work just to pay for their home and living expenses.Because both parents are at work, that means they then need to pay someone to look after their child during the day.Paying for this childcare is nearly always expensive.
The recent financial crisis is making things even harder for families, since unemployment is rising and even fewer people can afford to have children. With so much pressure on families,is it any surprise that the divorce rate is so high?
So what is Britain doing to try and save the British family? The government is trying to make it cheaper to have children. For example, there have been increases in money families can claim from the state each month. Also, there are increasing government subsidies for nursery schools,so that parents do not need to pay so much for childcare.
The government is also trying to reduce the number of hours British parents have to work to earn enough money to pay their bills. If parents didn't have to work so many hours, they'd have more time to spend with their children and wouldn't need to spend so much on childcare. On average,a Briton works 49 hours a week, which is the most in Europe. The state is now considering introducing laws to encourage companies to improve their employees' work-life balance.Let's hope they're not too late to save the British family.Otherwise, the British will always be too tired, and won't have enough time and money,to have children.

High school dropouts earn an average of $9,000 less per year than graduates. Now a new study moves away a common belief why they quit. It's much more than failing in exams at school.
Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can't cut it.They are lazy, and perhaps not too bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who quit school about why they left.
“The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have graduated from high school.”John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said.About 1 million teens leave school each year.Only about half of African-American and Hispanic(美籍西班牙的)students will receive a diploma, and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So,if failing grades don't explain why these kids quit, what does?Again,John Bridgeland said,“The most dependable finding was that they were bored.”“They found classes uninteresting;they weren't inspired or motivated. They didn't see any direct connection between what they were learning in the classroom to their own lives,or to their possible careers.”
The study found that most teens who do dropout wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit.In the US,only one state,New Mexico, has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate.Only four states:California,Tennessee,Texas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18,no exceptions.Another researcher says raising the compulsory attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school.
“As these dropouts look back, they realize they've made a mistake. And anything that sort of gives these people an extra push to stick it out,is probably a helpful measure.”
New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18.But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point—the need for reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant, and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.
I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A.B.C和D項中,選出最佳選項。
Without most people realizing it, there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work that used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use them.
The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (處理器) , or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.
There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager’s point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hours.
But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (顯示器). The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buy them.
Whatever the arguments for and against word processor are, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.
1. Ten years ago, smaller companies did not use large computers because_________.
A. these companies had not enough money to buy such expensive computers
B. these computers could not do the work that small computers can do today
C. these computers did not come onto the market
D. these companies did not need to use this new technology
2. According to the writer, the main feature of the revolution in office work over the last ten years is __________.
A. the saving of time and money
B. the use of computers in small companies
C. the wide use of word processors
D. the decreasing number of secretaries
3. It is implied but not directly stated in the passage that with the use of word processors _________.
A. some secretaries will lose their jobs
B. daily jobs can be done automatically outside office hours
C. medical problems related to work with a VDU have increased greatly
D. the British companies will make less money
4. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. There are both advantages and disadvantages in using a word processor.
B. The British companies care much for the health of the people using word processors.
C. The technology in the field of computers has been greatly advanced over the last ten years.
D. Using word processors, secretaries can get more time to do more interesting work for their bosses.
5. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A. safety screens are of poor quality
B. working at a VDU for a long time is good for one’s health
C. more and more British offices will use word processors
D. British companies will need fewer and fewer managers

Farming is moving indoors, where the sun never shines, where rainfall is irrelevant and where the climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with controlled light, temperature, wetness, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York high-rise or a sprawling complex in the Saudi desert. It may be an answer to the world's food problems.
The world already is having trouble feeding itself.Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those- about 3 billion-are hungry or ill-fed.Foodprices,currently increasing, are buffeted by dryness, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, harvestand transport. And prices will only get more unstable.Climate change makes long-term crop planning uncertain.Farmers in many parts of the world already are using water available to the last drop. And the world is getting more crowded:by mid-century,the global population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion.
To feed so many people may require expanding farmland at the expense of forests and wilderness,or finding ways to completely increase crop output.
Gertjan Meeuws has taken the concept of a greenhouse a step further, growing vegetables and house plants in enclosed (封閉的) and regulated environments. In their research station, water flows into the pans when needed, and the temperature is kept constant.Lights go on and off, creating similar day and night, but according to the rhythm of the plant.
A building of 100 square meters and layers (層) of plants could provide a daily diet of 200 grams of fresh fruit and vegetables to the entire population of Den Bosch, about 140,000 people.Their idea isn't to grow foods that require much space, like corn or potatoes.
Here sunlight is not only unnecessary but can be harmful.Plants need only specific wavelengths of light to grow.Their growth rate is three times faster than under greenhouse conditions. They use about 90 percent less water than outdoor agriculture. And city farming means producing food near the consumer, and there's no need to transport it long distances.

“Is there anything else you need, honey?” my dad asked me as he put three twenty-dollar bills in my hand. I was traveling back home from a family visit, and after treating me to breakfast and filling my car with gas, it was obvious that my dad wanted to make sure that I would be okay on the road.
“No, Dad. You've done so much already. Thank you!” I was overwhelmed once again by his kind acts of providing everything I needed, despite the fact I just turned 40. Yet I realize that in my father's eyes, I will always be his little girl. He takes deep pleasure in knowing his children are all right. Now that he has enough money, he loves to give whenever he sees a need.
But this was not always the case. Divorced from my mother when I was 11, my dad couldn't be around his kids as often as he would have liked. Money was also tight; even weekend visits were rare. However, my dad stayed in constant communication with us and made sure he was involved in our lives. Though he couldn't always be there in person, I knew he was only a phone call away. I could always count on that.
Even now, almost 30 years later, I treasure knowing that I can pick up the phone and call Dad, and he'll be there for me. I have a wonderful husband, but that hasn't changed how Dad sees me. I'm still his child and he loves to see that my needs are met.
I remember a time when I was shopping in a hardware store(五金店)with Dad. I mentioned my plans to paint one wall in my house. Well, that's all it took for Dad to take action. By the time I got to the checkout(結(jié)賬) line, all the supplies I picked out were put out of my hands and placed with things he bought.
Then there was the time when I took him with me to do some grocery shopping for just a few “ items”. By the time we were finished, my shopping cart was full of groceries from every shelf in the store! My sister and I joke that if you don't want Dad to buy it for you, avoid even mentioning you want something.

【2015高考復(fù)習(xí)】閱讀理解
One of the most debated issues about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don't drink tend to die sooner than those who do.The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is this:many of those who give up alcohol are actually former hard-core drunks who had already brought health problems associated with drinking.
But a new paper suggests that abstaining(戒除)from alcohol does tend to increase one's risk of dying, even when you leave former problem drinkers out.The most shocking part—abstainers'(禁酒者)mortality rates(死亡率)are higher than those of heavy drinkers.
Moderate(適度的)drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day,is associated with the lowest mortality rates.Moderate alcohol use is thought to improve heart health, circulation and sociability, which can be important because people who are cut off don't have as many family members and friends who can notice and help treat health problems.
But why would abstaining from alcohol lead to a shorter life? It's true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive. And people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors(壓力因素).
Though heavy drinking is associated with higher risk for many diseases,heavy_drinkers_are_less_likely_to_die_than_don't_drink.One important reason is that alcohol strengthens social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health.Nondrinkers show greater signs of depression.
The authors of the new paper are careful to note that even if drinking is associated with a longer life,it can be dangerous:it can affect your memory severely and it can lead to falls and other troubles that can affect your life. There's also the dependency issue:if you become addicted to alcohol, you may spend a long time trying to get off the bottle.
16.What can we know from the Alcoholics Anonymous explanation and the new paper?
A.The former finds that abstainers can live longer than heavy drinkers.
B.The former finds that nondrinkers can live longer than heavy drinkers.
C.The latter finds that healthy abstainers can live shorter than heavy drinkers.
D.The latter finds that nondrinkers can live shorter than heavy drinkers.
答案 C [細(xì)節(jié)推理題。由文章第二段的第一句話“即使不算那些之前喝酒后來戒酒的人,不喝酒也確實會導(dǎo)致死亡率升高”可知,C項正確。]
