Ebola(埃博拉病毒) has struck hard in Sierra Leone (塞拉利昂共和國).More than one million children have been unable to attend school because the spread of the disease is so fast. But classes are now broadcast on 41 radio stations. The educational programs are airing three hours daily, five days a week.
In the country's capital,F(xiàn)reetown,17-year-old student Doris Ansumana says radio broadcasts have made a big change from her usual days at school. She says life has become tiresome—not interesting. She misses the social life. She misses going to school and seeing other students. She notes, however, that others do not have the chance to study because they have to work. Her father expresses concern about other young students because many are being forced into labor instead of study. He says some students are selling things because they do not have money to go to school.
Brima Michael Turay, director for the Ministry of Education,Science and Technology, says the ideal(理想的) goal is to have the broadcasts take place from eleven in the morning until five in the afternoon. He says the ministry worked hard to get teachers' opinions and advice for the broadcasts. He says parents must understand that the ministry cannot continually protect their children.“This has to be one of their greatest responsibilities.”
The broadcasts teach and comfort children. They tell children that they are not alone in the Ebola crisis(危機(jī)).Mr.Turay says the broadcasts also advise children on how to protect themselves and others.“Wash your hands.Do this and do that,so you don't end up losing your life or losing a family member and all of that.”
The Education,Science and Technology Ministry will continue to present more programs. It has also planned to bring solar-powered radios to areas of Sierra Leone without electricity.

When I heard the piano, I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside as I always did. That meant she was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. “Almost anything”, I sighed dejectedly. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. It didn’t come to me naturally. I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends, cutting up old clothes to make dresses that performers wear in plays, and building scenery out of old things we found. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music.
“Hello,” I heard a voice behind me say softly. I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me, eating an apple. But before I could make any response, Mrs. Windsor walked into the room in her usual urgent manner and announced, “Jennifer, this is my niece, Pasha. Pasha, this is Jennifer. Pasha will be giving you your lesson today. I’m up to my ears in something else!” she then exited to the kitchen.
Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench.
“What piece do you like best?” she asked.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “They’re all the same to me. I don’t know.
“You mean you don’t have a favorite?”
“No, not really.”
Pasha looked at me, rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys and studied the notes on the page for a moment. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant.
“Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?”
“I guess I’ve never thought about it before. I don’t know.”
“Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”
Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A carefree, happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’s horse sees her plight (困境),” Pasha continued, and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and swears she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirt from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.
“Aren’t you the girl who tells the stories?” she asked.
“I guess. I do tell a lot of stories.”
“Oh, yes! All the kids talk about them. I’ve heard about you. Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music. That’s all there is to it.”
“I’ve never thought it that way.”
“Let’s try another one, shall we?” Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.

Recently I had a conversation in Beijing with an adult Chinese friend who was complaining
how difficult it was to study English..No surprises there. It is a difficult language to master, just
like Chinese. I made a few suggestions based on my~experience. One involved a very valuable
fact which I learned from my high school Latin and Greek teacher, Dr. Smith. He is a gifted linguist (語言學(xué)家),and has an amazing ability to memorize things, like poetry, essays, speeches, etc.His advice to us students is that for memorization purposes, there is forty minutes each day in which our memory is more receptive than it is during the other 23 hours and 20 minutes.
This 40-minute "super memory" period is divided into two parts: the 20 minutes before we
sleep, hnd the 20 minutes after we first awake. The theory supporting this is pretty simple. First,
the last information we input into our brain before bed has a better chance of taking root than
information obtained during the noisy daytime; and, second, our mind is free of disturbance when
we first awake in the morning一so more receptive to inputs, like a blank slate(石板).
I took the advice to heart and it served me well in my school years. In my university days,
our Chinese teacher would assign us 200 new vocabulary words each day, on which we would be
quizzed the following day. Without the "magic" 40-minute technique, there's no way I would have
passed those daily quizzes.
As far as language study goes, it's not only useful for memorizing vocabulary. It's also a very
useful window of time to listen to the language we're studying even with background noise, and
even if it's at a level we find difficult to understand. It might be audio(聲音的)language study
aids, or just radio, TV or whatever.
Beyond our years of formal education, memory skills are hugely important in any career.
How many times have we heard a speaker read their speech from. a prepared text, or read the
word-by-word content of a PowerPoint presentation as they present each slide? These are
annoying, boring, and ineffective ways of communicating. They are almost guaranteed to lose the
audience's close attention and interest, let alone persuade or inspire anyone to do anything. And
yet lots of people still make this mistake.
If we use the 40-minute technique, we may not succeed in memorizing our presentation
content on a 100% word-by-word basis, but we'll be familiar enough so that we can spend much
more time making eye contact with our audience. We will engage them in the process, while
glancing at our text instead of staring at it. This will also free up our hands and arms to convey
some extra messages through gesture.
As you see, the technique really works, but like many things,- it takes practice to perfect it.
Therefore,we'd better find ways to use the language outside of the classroom,as regularly and
frequently as possible. One fundamental rule of language learning is, "Use it, or lose it·”
Seize the' forty-minute learning window and we'll bring in a rich harvest of language learning.

Decreasing grain prices along with growing costs of production means Chinese farmers are unlikely to see a significant rise in income next year.
China’s economic planning chief Ma Kai expressed the concern as the government undertakes an ambitious program to improve rural people’s lives.
Grain prices have been dropping since April; and prices of wheat, corn and rice fell 5 per cent from August to October compared with the same period last year, Ma, minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told an annual meeting on development and reform held over the weekend.
Meanwhile, prices of production materials rose 9.1 per cent year on year during the first 10 months.
The situation makes it difficult to achieve a “new socialist countryside,” which was last week highlighted(引起注意)as a new concept and “common action” of the whole Party and nation.
Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie also said China’s entry to the World Trade Organization also creates hurdles for income rises for the country’s 780 million farmers.
Farmers’ income is expected to increase by 5 per cent this year, hitting the target set by the central government at the beginning of this year.
Last year, per capita net income(個(gè)人平均純收入)of Chinese farmers reached 2,936 yuan (US$362), up 6.8 per cent year on year, and the highest increase since 1997.
Ma also said China would continue to seek fast, steady economic growth in 2006 but more efforts will be made to deal with the challenges brought about by overheating in some industrial sectors (區(qū)域).
