All trade in five named species of sharks is to be regulated (管制) from now on.Without a permit, the sale of their meat or fins(鰭) will be forbidden.
The regulation was agreed last year at a meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in Thailand.According to the rules, the whitetip (白鰭鯊),the porbeagle (鼠鯊),and three varieties of hammerhead will be protected.Besides, manta rays (比目魚),valued for their gills (鰓)which are used in Chinese medicine, will also be protected.
The action is seen as the most important one in the 40-year history to protect these species.
“Regulating international trade in these shark and manta ray species has a great effect on their survival and is a very clear way of helping to protect sharks and our oceans,” said Secretary General John Scanlon.“The practical steps will involve issues such as limiting export levels, and identifying the fins, gills and meat that are in trade. This may seem challenging, but by working together we can do it and we will do it.”
Under the rules, all trade in these sharks and rays across 180 countries will not be allowed unless they have got their permits given by the national related organization.
As a matter of fact, trade in shark fins has already decreased greatly as a result of campaigns to raise awareness.Recently it has been reported that sales have gone down by 70%.Earlier this year the hotel giant,Hilton Worldwide stopped serving shark fins at its 96 owned and managed Asia-Pacific hotels.
However,Denmark,Canada,Guyana,Japan,Iceland and Yemen have all announced they will not follow the new rules and will continue to fish for some or all of these species.Under the regulations though, they are only able to trade with other countries that are also ready to ignore the rules.
Officials point out that for such a questioned issue, the number of countries which is going to continue the trade is small.

A German study suggests that people who were too optimistic about their future actually faced greater risk of disability or death within 10 years than those pessimists( 悲觀者)who expected their future to be worse.
The paper, published this March in Psychology and Aging, examined health and welfare surveys from roughly 40,000 Germans between ages 18 and 96. The surveys were conducted every year from 1993 to 2003.
Survey respondents (受訪者) were asked to estimate their present and future life satisfaction on a scale of 0 to 10, among other questions.
The researchers found that young adults (age 18 to 39) routinely overestimated their future life satisfaction, while middle-aged adults (age 40 to 64) more accurately predicted how they would feel in the future. Adults of 65 and older, however, were far more likely to underestimate their future life satisfaction. Not only did they feel more satisfied than they thought they would, the older pessimists seemed to suffer a lower ratio (比率) of disability and death for the study period.
“We observed that being too optimistic in predicting a better future than actually observed was associated with a greater risk of disability and a greater risk of death within the following decade,” wrote Frieder R. Lang, a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Lang and his colleagues believed that people who were pessimistic about their future may be more careful about their actions than people who expected a rosy future.
“Seeing a dark future may encourage positive evaluations of the actual self and may contribute to taking improved precautions (預(yù)防措施),” the authors wrote.
Surprisingly, compared with those in poor health or who had low incomes, respondents who enjoyed good health or income were associated with expecting a greater decline. Also, the researchers said that higher income was related to a greater risk of disability.
The authors of the study noted that there were limitations to their conclusions. Illness, medical treatment and personal loss could also have driven health outcomes. However, the researchers said a pattern was clear. “We found that from early to late adulthood, individuals adapt their expectations of future life satisfaction from optimistic, to accurate, to pessimistic,” the authors concluded.
【小題1】According to the study, who made the most accurate prediction of their future life satisfaction?
A.Optimistic adults.
B.Middle-aged adults.
C.Adults in poor health.
D.Adults of lower income.
【小題2】Pessimism may be positive in some way because it causes people ______.
A.to fully enjoy their present life
B.to estimate their contribution accurately
C.to take measures against potential risks
D.to value health more highly than wealth
【小題3】How do people of higher income see their future?
A.They will earn less money.
B.They will become pessimistic.
C.They will suffer mental illness.
D.They will have less time to enjoy life.
【小題4】What is the clear conclusion of the study?
A.Pessimism guarantees chances of survival.
B.Good financial condition leads to good health.
C.Medical treatment determines health outcomes.
D.Expectations of future life satisfaction decline with age.

My son David, who was 3.5 years old, taught me a beautiful lesson today. After we finished playing with the beads (珠子) , David slowly picked up each bead, looking at it as if it were made of chocolate and then put it into the box they were stored in. With over a hundred beads to go, I was getting impatient. "Why could he not pick up 10 in one go and put them in? My morning was going to be ruined today!"
But then it hit me like a brick. I noticed that he did this with as much interest as he had while we were playing. The boy was enjoying the whole process. For him the fun was in the game itself as well as in the process of properly packing up and cleaning up. It was not just about his turn or the fun part. Every bit was as fun as the other.
I thought of myself as a kid when we would go out to play cricket (板球). If I was not batting or bowling (擊球或擲球), I was unhappy as I impatiently waited for my turn to do so. As a result, I was unhappy while waiting for my turn and only happy for the few moments I either batted or bowled. Only the process of doing something I combined with happiness made me cheerful. The rest of the time I was waiting for my rum in the future or recalling great bowling from the past.
Looking at how peacefully my son was putting beads into the box taught me that the process is the goal. The joy of journey is not in getting there but in every step of it.
1. Why was the father getting upset?
A. He wasn't interested in the game.
B. His son didn't do it as he was told to.
C. It'd take long to put away the beads.
D. David put away the beads casually.
2. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. I was hit by David with a brick.
B. I felt very annoyed at what David did.
C. I was at a loss what to do with David.
D. I suddenly understood David's behavior.
3. We can learn from the text that the author _____.
A. felt satisfied with his teammates
B. happily watched his teammates play
C. was eager to join in the game
D. thought it a pleasure to win a match
4. What did the author learn from this experience?
A. Happiness resulted from doing something pleasant.
B. The process was more important than the result.
C. It was important for children to develop good habits.
D. What children thought was different from that of adults.

Spring peepers are found in wooded areas and grassy lowlands near pools in the central and eastern parts of Canada and the United States. These loud animals are rarely seen, but as temperatures begin to rise in March and April, the males certainly are heard. Their peep...peep... peep creates an other-worldly whistling sound that, to many, is the first sign of spring, compared with that of some birds.
Spring peepers are brown in color with dark lines that form an X on their backs. They grow to about 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) in length, and have large special toes for climbing. These creatures are active at night, coming out to feed on ants, beetles, flies, and spiders.
When the warmer weather arrives, male frogs attempt to attract a mate with a spring song. The frogs normally perform in singing. The one who starts each round usually has the deepest voice. The "vocal sacs" under their mouths allow the frogs to "sing". They fill their vocal sacs with air until they look like a balloon, and then they let out a "peep" as they release the air. They "peep" about once every second. These sounds can often be heard as far as a half-mile away
After a female and male peeper mate, the female lays her eggs in water and spends the remainder of the year in the forest. During the winter, they sleep under logs or behind loose bark on trees. The music dies down during the cold months, but the sounds of peepers will soon be heard again, sounding the coming of spring.
5. The text is written mainly to _____.
A. tell people what spring peepers look like
B. let people know more about spring peepers
C. explain why spring peepers sing
D. show environmental harmony in nature
6. What can we know about the spring peepers from the text?
A. They prefer to live in the dry areas in North America.
B. They are the first animals to make sounds in spring.
C. They can live both in water and on land.
D. They are active during the cold months of the year.
7. What does the underlined word "release" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. turn out. B. break out. C. leave out. D. let out.
8. The best title for this text might be _____?
A. The Ring of Tiny Frogs in Spring
B. The Relationship between Animals and Seasons
C. The Living Conditions of Spring Peepers
D. The Invitation from a Male Peeper

They’re WILD animals
By Ernst-Ulrich Franzen
March 11, 2010(3) Comments
The story about the woman who lost some fingers while feeding a bear at a zoo in Manitowoc, after she ignored warnings and barriers(柵欄), reminded me of the story I heard about a couple who put their baby on the back of a wild horse in South Dakota to get a really cute picture. We all do silly things at times — no one is immune — but treating wild animals as lovely pets has to fall into a special category. Teddy bears and Disney movies aren’t actually representative of real bears.

Don’t you think that maybe, just maybe some alcohol was involved?
2. tk421 - Mar 11, 2010 11:09 AM
It was already approved that alcohol was involved. Stories that begin with a drunk person saying “Hey, I got an idea, watch this!” rarely end well.
3. Tristan Kloss - Mar 11, 2010 11:41 AM
Alcohol certainly isn’t involved when people decide to keep “pets” like chimpanzees, baby tigers, etc. Stupidity, definitely. Dogs are pets because of thousands of years of domestication. Even farm animals, which have been kept by humans for thousands of years as well, aren’t let in the house. So why keep animals that treat human contact with, at best, indifference(冷淡、不在乎) and, at worst, violence?
【小題1】In Ernst-Ulrich Franzen’s opinion, the woman lost her fingers because ________.
A.the zoo keepers didn’t warn her of the danger
B.she didn’t know the bear was a wild animal
C.she was somehow influenced by cartoon characters
D.she climbed over the barriers and angered the bear
【小題2】TosaLeft thinks the wounded woman ________.
A.may have been drunk
B.may be a little stupid
C.was addicted to wine
D.fed wine to the bear
【小題3】tk421 means a drunk person ________.
A.should be forbidden to enter the zoo
B.usually gets himself into trouble
C.is often fond of making up stories
D.usually likes to show himself off
【小題4】What does Tristan Kloss think of people treating wild animals as pets?
A.Kind. B.Illegal.
C.Loving. D.Stupid.
