Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity. But,it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.
J.K.Rowling,author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at the age of 6.In her biography, she remembers with great fondness when her good friend Sean, whom she met in secondary school, became the first person to encourage her and help build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.
“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it,which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Despite many setbacks,Rowling persevered in her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn’t until 1990 that she first conceived the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls,it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into her head.“To my immense frustration (沮喪),I didn’t have a functioning pen with me,and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one.I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this scrawny,black-haired,bespectacled (戴眼鏡的) boy who didn’t know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”
That same year, her mother passed away after a ten-year battle with multiple sclerosis, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time,Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression.Unemployed, she completed her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being rejected by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages,J.K.Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her commitment to writing that was fostered by the confidence of a friend!

Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It’s an instinct which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we’re using resources wihtin the unconscious mind. When the resources of two persons’ unconscious minds think link together into the same frequency. We call it telepathy.
We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person, and they call you, you are most likely better at sending.
You can easily put your abilities to the test. Think of somebody and will them to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try "feeling" who's contacting you. Don't guess, try to feel the vibrations. However, if neither of these work for you, that doesn't mean that you are not capable of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.
Telepathic Dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other, and find that their dreams have a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other’s uncounscious mind.
Telepathy&Relationships The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the others mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the others, mind through time spent together;the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child desperately wanting his/her mother, knowing that this is the person who would always want to be there for them, and the mothers deep desire to protect her child from harm.
1. When does telepathy occur?
A. It occurs when one senses that a close friend of his/her is in danger.
B. It occurs when one has very good five senses.
C. It occurs when one wants to call his/her best friend.
D. It occurs when one doesn’t know a stranger.
由第一段第一、二句話 “Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It’s an instinct which can be woken up in times of emergency or need.”
2. Which of the following can be used as the title of the passage?
A. Receiving Telepathy B. Telepathy: Mind-to Mind Contact
C. Telepathy: People’s Dream D. Dream of Telepathy
3. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The more people separate, the more likely that telepathy will occur.
B. It is by using the five senses that telepathy occurs.
C. Telepahy happens when people live far away and have no chance to see one another.
D. One is better at sending than receiving telepathy if one receives a friend’s call as one wishes.
由第二段 “If you think of a person, and they call you, you are most likely better at sending.”
由最后一段 “The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the others mind, especially when separated.”
4. Which of the following belongs to telepathy?
A. By accident, you are aware of a friend of yours is coming to see you.
B. People’s communication over the telephone.
C. A mother’s sense of her child is in danger.
D. A couple’s long separation.
由最后一段 “ A mother will often sense that her child is in danger..”
Farm-raised pigs are dirty, smelly animals that get no respect. They’re also an environmental hazard. Their manure(糞便)contains phosphorus(磷),which, when it rains, runs off into lakes and rivers, consuming oxygen, killing fish, stimulating algae(藻類)overgrowth and emitting greenhouse gases.
Doing away with the pig is not an option. Pigs provide more dietary protein, more cheaply, to more people than any other animal. Northern Europe still maintains the highest pig-to-human ratio(比率)in the world (2-1 in Denmark), but East Asia is catching up. During the 1990s, pork production doubled in Vietnam and grew by 70 percent in China—along densely populated coastlines, pig density exceeds 100 animals per square kilometer. The resulting pollution is “threatening fragile coastal marine habitats including mangroves(紅樹林),coral reefs and sea grasses ,”according to a report released in February by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
As it turns out, there is a solution to the pig problem, but it requires a change of mind-set among environmentalists and the public. Two Canadian scientists have created a pig whose manure doesn’t contain very much phosphorus at all. If this variety of pig were adopted widely, It could greatly reduce a major source of pollution. But the Enviropig, as they call it, is the product of genetic modification—which is anathema(忌諱) to many Westerners.
The Enviropig is one of many new technologies that are putting environmentalists and organic-food supporters in a quandary: should they remain categorically(無條件) opposed to genetically modified (GM)foods even at the expense of the environment? Elsewhere, trees grown for paper could be made amenable to much more efficient processing, reducing both energy usage and toxic chemical bleach(漂白劑) in waste water from paper mills. The most significant GM applications will be ones that help lessen the problem of agriculture , which accounts for 38percent of the world’s landmass and is crowding out natural ecosystems and species habitats.
Chances are, farmers will continue to grow their polluting organic pork, their allergenic(引起過敏的)organic soy and their neurotoxin(神經(jīng)毒素) sprayed organic apples. Worse still, they will make sure that no one else gets a choice in the matter of improving the conditions of life on earth—unless, that is, others rise up and demand an alternative.

Buying a house for most of the people is a once in a lifetime decision, which means people decide to do so only after coming across the ideal house. Surprisingly, eight in every 10 home buyers are unhappy with their houses.
A survey conducted by the Beijing Consumers' Association (BCA) recently shows about 80 percent of the 2,315 respondents in 23 residential complexes of Beijing are dissatisfied with the soaring house prices. They think the reasonable price in Beijing should be between 3,000 yuan and 7,000 yuan per square meter. The quality of the buildings, the surrounding environment and traffic and property management are the other factors that play a role in people's decision to buy a house.
The BCA has suggested strict sales regulations and contracts to ease house-owners' sufferings. It has urged the authorities to impose severe punishment on developers found violating building and other rules and joining hands with others to bid up property prices
About 41.2 percent of the respondents have complained that their houses have defective designs, while nearly 40 percent say the lighting and ventilation are far from satisfactory. The landscapes in the residential areas are a source of unhappiness for 43.2 percent of the respondents, and about one-third say they were "bluffed" into buying "third grade" houses. And more than half are not satisfied with the sport and entertainment facilities in their neighborhood. Property management in the buildings, 56.5 percent of the respondents say, is way below standard compared to the high fee charged by the complexes. A 60 percent of the consumers doubt the contents of developers' advertisements, with only 6.3 percent being satisfied.
Experts have suggested consumers gather thorough knowledge about a developer and their work before deciding to buy a house from it. They should check the day-light conditions and ventilation in different weather conditions in advance, if possible.
